Questions to Ask Potential Employers

These questions assume that this information is not a matter of public record or available to be researched.

  • Is the organization privately held?  If yes, who owns it?
  • How long has the organizations been in existence?
  • How many employees do you have?
  • Where are your other locations?
  • What are the organizations current major challenges?
  • Have there been any layoffs?  When was the last one?  Are more forthcoming?
  • May I have a copy of the current organizational chart, employee’s handbook, in-house publications, job description?
  • Was this job posted internally?  Are you also looking within the organization to fill the position?
  • DO you expect your recent rate of income/sales increase/decline to continue this year?
  • Do you feel I have the characteristics necessary to be hired and to advance in this organization?
  • How firm are the organization’s requirements for the position?
  • What do you feel are the most important aspects of this position?
  • Who will be interviewing me?  Position/title/management style?
  • Who will make the final hiring decision?
  • How soon do you want an employee in place?
  • When will you have to make a hiring decision?
  • How long have you worked here?
  • What do you like about this organization?
  • Would this position lead to other job openings?
  • Can I visit the department; get a tour of the facility?
  • Are there other ways of meeting the requirements of the position that m ay enhance the value of my experience/strengths?
  • Would you be able to share any financial information with me?  Sales? Net income? Budget of the department that I would be a part of?
  • How does the organization regard its employees?
  • How many applicants have applied for this job?
  • How long do you think it will take until you make a decision?
  • What could I say or do to convince you to offer me this job?
  • Can I telephone you in ___ days to inquire about your decision?
